    and their families.

The series is made possible through collaboration of the Missouri Humanities Council, Southeast Missouri State University Press and the Warriors Arts Alliance.

Both events are free and open to the public. Copies of Volume Two will be available for purchase and signing by some of the authors. All venues are handicapped accessible.

Poem included in “Proud to Be: Writing by American Warriors” anthology series by Joseph Carvalko

    REGISTERED LETTER

    Emotions spill
    Sympathy
    Endless
    Hope—,

    Expectancy
    Can’t cope
    With death,
    But all harden

    In the footnote1
    Of the end
    Of hope
    Of the hope

    Shrouded
    and stilled
    in the unexpected
    envelope.

    1. “Since your son, Private First Class…
infantry, was reported missing in action on…
Department of the Army has entertained the hope…
Full consideration has been given to all information…
Accordingly, a finding of death has been recorded under law.”
